Metaphor and Allegory Lecture.

I recently had a lecture at university on 'Metaphor and Allegory'. In this lecture we were learnt the difference between both words and the meanings behind them.

Metaphor; Figure of speech in which term is transferred to something it does not literally apply to.

Sarah Lucas 'Self portrait with two fried eggs'
'Au Naturel 1994 Mattress, water bucket, melons, oranges
and cucumber'
A Metaphor should not be confused with simile where a simile makes the comparison explicit by using 'like or 'as'

Allegory; (i) Story with a meaning other than the literal one
(ii) Description of one thing under image of another.

After very briefly being shown the meanings of both these words, we were confronted with a picture by Sarah Lucas called 'Self portrait with two fried eggs'

We were then asked to pull read the connotations of the image and depict the meaning behind what Lucas is trying to portray. We started with the obvious, the fried eggs. Now the obvious connotations that come with placing fried eggs on the breast area is to imply small breasts, if any. It was funny because everyone in the group was thinking the same thing, yet no one plucked up the courage to say what they thought! After having had a talk with our lecturer we were put into groups and asked to think about other metaphors we could recognise. We first noticed the camera angle, which places Lucas beneath the photographer, leaving her in quite a vulnerable position. Lucas' choice of pose in the armchair she is sitting in to many is how a male would sit. This along with other metaphors makes you think maybe she struggles with her sexuality?

After deconstructing the last image of Lucas' we were excited to look at another installation piece she had made. The picture is called '
Au Naturel 1994 Mattress, water bucket, melons, oranges and cucumber'. We were also asked to pick out the metaphors in the image in groups again. Starting with obvious metaphors, one can clearly see what looks to be a mans genitals made from two oranges and a cucumber. The same with what seem to be a metaphor for women's breasts. To begin with we picked up the idea of a stale marriage which came from the worn dirty mattress.
