David Cotterrell: Monsters of the Id Exhibition

David Cotterrell; Monsters of the Id
A Picture I took of David Cotterrell's innovative work.
On Monday the 20th of February I along with my course friends made a trip to the John Hansard Gallery to view an exhibition by a man called David Cotterrell. The exhibition was called 'Monsters of the Id'. David's work spans video, audio, interactive media, artificial intelligence and hybrid technology. Derived from his journeys to Afghanistan, Monsters of the Id tests our expectations of cinematic and media representation, presenting a series of new works that experiment with advanced display technologies. The exhibition captures the disorientation of a civilian observer within a militarised environment.

Upon entering the gallery I was immersed in a landscape that crosses the physical and virtual. His work presents viewers with a projected image of a distant, self-absorbed population. As I remained in the space, this virtual community grows in number and becomes distracted by their presence.

David Cotterrell who is a professor of fine art, produces cutting edge technology works, mainly using computer programming. This particular exhibition gives you a disorientated viewpoint of different landscapes. The technology David uses is like software you could use for military training, which links nicely to the idea and concept behind his work.
